Johnny Depp is an Owensboro Native Who Still Visits!

Owensboro is the hometown of several world-famous celebrities, and one of them is none other than Johnny Depp!

Yep, the actor who starred in Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (among many others) was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on June 9, 1963. Pretty cool, right?

Depp lived in Owensboro until 1970 when his family moved to Miramar, Florida, but he still has family who live in town, and he even paid a visit to them last year to the excitement of a lucky group of locals who got to meet and take photos with him.

There have been tales of other Johnny Depp sightings in Owensboro over the years, including a time when a local looked over to their right at a traffic stop and spotted Depp sitting in the front seat of a red sports car. The man just stared, stunned to see Depp in a car right next to him on Frederica Street. Allegedly, Depp just smiled and waved at the man before the light turned green and he drove on.

Visitors can visit a mural dedicated to Depp in Owensboro. “Candiculture” was painted on the south-facing wall of the historic Andria’s Candies building in downtown Owensboro (217 Allen Street) by Czech artist Pavel Forman and artist Monty Helm in 2012.

And, even though Depp has gone on to do amazing things in Hollywood, it seems that the A-list actor proudly recognizes Owensboro as his hometown. If you look up Johnny Depp on Facebook, his profile states, “Born in Owensboro, Kentucky. Father of Lily-Rose and Jack.”
