Sour Mash Distilling was incorporated in 1868 about mile east of Owensboro near Glenmore. It began operations with a capacity of eight barrels a day and increased it to 50. Its main brands were M.V. Monarch, Sovereign and Jockey Club.
In 1882, M.V. Monarch said the whiskey business was slow and the distillery would not be making whiskey until the following year. But business improved and in 1888, Sour Mash bought the E.C. Berry Distillery and its 2,000 barrels of whiskey and John Hanning Distillery and its 700 barrels. Production ended with Prohibition and the distillery filed for bankruptcy protection in 1933.
