Owensboro’s momentum as one of Kentucky’s premier sports tourism destinations has never been stronger. In just the first seven months of 2026, the city has welcomed an impressive lineup of events, including 11 High School State Championships, two Collegiate Conference Championships, two Archery National Championships, professional disc golf and cornhole events, six youth and adult state championships, the ACO World Championships of Cornhole, the Grind Session Basketball World Championships, and the two-week Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit. Those events represent only a portion of the activity taking place across our community, as countless additional travel tournaments, local competitions, and community sporting events continue to fill facilities throughout the year. These events don’t just create headlines; they create a real impact for our community. This consistent growth has helped establish Owensboro as a destination where athletes of all ages come to compete, while also generating significant economic impact for local hotels, restaurants, retailers, and small businesses. The success of sports tourism extends beyond visitors; it creates more opportunities for local athletes to compete against high-level competition close to home and strengthens the overall sports culture within our community. These events don’t come to Owensboro simply because of our facilities, but because of the individuals throughout our community who work with them.
As the school year begins, the calendar only gets stronger. Owensboro is preparing to host Kentucky 2A State Championships in Golf, Volleyball and Soccer, the Kentucky All “A” Volleyball Classic, the NAIA Southeast Regional ITA Tennis Championships, the ACHA Hockey on the Ohio Showcase, the D2CCA Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Classic, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Softball Tournament, Arena Wars Fighting Series, the ACO Cornhole Fall Major, the River City Pickleball Open, the new Owensboro Adult Futsal Cup, and even more announcements will be coming in the months ahead. Looking to the future, the continued expansion of facilities, including the Bluegrass Fieldhouse and the Ben Hawes Pickleball Facility, will elevate Owensboro’s ability to attract larger regional and national events, creating additional hotel stays, restaurant traffic, and business opportunities throughout the community. Every tournament, championship, and showcase brings new visitors to experience Owensboro’s hospitality while providing local athletes with greater access to elite competition and pathways for growth.
