Gary Harris Honored with Visit Owensboro’s 2026 MAG Award

The best thing about Owensboro has always been its people. Every day, they welcome visitors with a smile, lend a helping hand, and make our community a place people want to return to. That’s exactly what the Larry “MAG” Maglinger Service Award celebrates.

Visit Owensboro is proud to recognize Gary Harris, a Meijer associate whose warm smile, positive attitude, and genuine kindness make him one of Owensboro’s best ambassadors.

“I’m just a humble person trying to do the right thing,” Harris said.

Named in honor of the late Larry “MAG” Maglinger—former Owensboro City Commissioner and Visit Owensboro board liaison—the MAG Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to make others feel welcome while shaping Owensboro’s reputation for outstanding hospitality.

If the community’s reaction is any indication, Visit Owensboro made the right choice. Social media quickly filled with comments describing Gary as “one of a kind,” “a heart of gold,” “one in a million,” and “the kind of person who makes the world brighter.” Others said it best: “We need more Garys.”

“Gary reminds us that the smallest acts of kindness can have the biggest impact,” said Mark Calitri, President & CEO of Visit Owensboro. “He represents everything that’s good about Owensboro. His servant’s heart, positive attitude, and genuine care for people reflect the kind of community we’re proud to call home.”

Visit Owensboro also extends its heartfelt appreciation to Tammy, Curtis, and Brad Maglinger for their continued support of the MAG Award and for preserving Larry’s legacy of service, hospitality, and community pride. The Maglinger family has given so much to Owensboro, and we’re grateful they continue to help celebrate the people who make our community such a welcoming place.

Congratulations, Gary Harris. Thank you for making Owensboro shine.
