Wathen Speaks at Grind Session Banquet

The nation’s biggest winter prep basketball circuit, the Grind Session, was in town this past weekend for their World Championships. The Grind Session is known for producing high-level Division 1 basketball talent; many of whom often go on to play in the NBA and WNBA ranks.

With the circuit’s full women’s postseason tournament being played in the Sportscenter this year, the Grind Session held its end-of-the-season banquet and awards ceremony on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan. This year’s keynote speaker was Owensboro local, Mary Katherine Wathen. Wathen, a nationally recognized business consultant, speaker, coach, and author, is an active member of our community, always looking to give back.

Wathen’s message focused on the young female athletes preparing for a life after basketball and rooting their identity in their faith.

“It was such an honor to speak at the Grind Session to all of the elite basketball players,” she said regarding the experience, “I was so impressed with the level of talent and the event that was brought to Owensboro! I have so much hope for our future after speaking with some of these athletes. They are interested in excellence and purpose, something we need in our culture today.”

Being able to connect successful members within our community who want to give back to the next generation is at the forefront of Visit Owensboro’s sports focus. Our city has become a national stage to many world-renowned athletic groups who have recognized what our community has to offer. It’s not just about providing a facility for these young athletes to play in. It goes beyond that. Owensboro’s community partners strive to establish meaningful relationships and connections that leave a lasting impression on the athletes who come here to compete!
