Visit Owensboro’s Winning Formula: Turning Elite Student-Athletes Into a Competitive Edge

Hustle matters.
Effort matters.
Standards matter.

At Visit Owensboro, we are building a high-achieving culture rooted in preparation, accountability and execution. That culture is intentional — and it has become a competitive edge.

We are recruiting elite student-athletes not simply because they played sports, but because they have already proven they can perform at a high level. They understand discipline. They understand pressure. They understand how to prepare and how to deliver when expectations are high.

Mark Calitri, president of Visit Owensboro, calls it “turning college athletes into community leaders and keeping young talent here.”

Calitri said Visit Owensboro is “finding success by intentionally hiring and developing college student-athletes through partnerships with local colleges.”

“The long-term goal is to recruit young people to Owensboro, help them grow through education and real work experience, and encourage them to stay, build careers and build families in the community,” Calitri said.

Real Talent. Real Results.

Daylin Tolgo came to Kentucky Wesleyan College from Huntsville, Alabama on a bowling scholarship. She interned with Visit Owensboro while earning her communications degree.

“She was given real responsibility and real expectations,” Calitri said. “She delivered on what was asked of her — and then she exceeded it. She showed creativity, took ownership, followed through, and earned trust. That internship turned into a full-time position.”

“Daylin represents how student-athletes can turn opportunity into a career and choose to stay in Owensboro,” he said.

Lucas Daunhauer brought championship-level experience to the organization. A graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, he earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University, won an NCAA national championship and competed professionally overseas before joining Visit Owensboro in sports destination sales and development.

“Lucas represents how elite athletic experience — from winning a national championship to competing professionally overseas — translates directly into workplace leadership and performance,” Calitri said.

Addy Harris, a student-athlete at Brescia University, balances collegiate softball with professional experience as a social media and marketing intern.

“As a student-athlete, she manages a demanding schedule while gaining real-world experience locally,” Calitri said. “She brings strong time-management, teamwork and accountability into her work. Addy represents the next generation of young professionals developing in Owensboro.”

Why This Model Works

Dr. James Cousins, president of Kentucky Wesleyan College, noted that student-athletes operate in environments that demand academic rigor and performance under pressure. They are asked to raise standards, sacrifice for team success and deliver consistently.

Jason Vittone, vice president for intercollegiate athletics at Kentucky Wesleyan College, emphasized that discipline, accountability and resilience developed through athletics prepare students for professional success long after their playing careers end. They learn to manage time, work as a team, overcome adversity and perform under pressure — qualities every employer values.

Those qualities align directly with the culture Visit Owensboro is building.

This is not a short-term hiring trend.

It is a long-term strategy.

Recruit elite student-athletes.
Develop them professionally.
Retain them in Owensboro.

“When they stay and invest in this community, Owensboro wins,” Calitri said.

This approach was recently highlighted by the Messenger-Inquirer and its parent company, Paxton Media Group — a respected regional and national newspaper organization — reinforcing the credibility of this model beyond the local level.

Owensboro is not just attracting visitors.

We are building talent.
We are raising standards.
We are creating a culture that competes.

That is our edge.
