Owensboro Makes a Statement with National Sports Events | Mark Calitri | Visit Owensboro

Owensboro Is Making a Statement

Owensboro is not waiting for opportunity. We are competing for it.

When nearly 1,000 archers and approximately 2,500 additional fans and family members come to town for the S3DA Eastern Indoor Nationals, that is not a small regional gathering. That is a national-caliber event choosing Owensboro.

Additional coverage from the Messenger-Inquirer highlights the scope and community impact:

(Reporting on nearly 1,000 archers competing in Owensboro and the visitor presence across the city.)

That weekend alone brings roughly 3,500 visitors into our hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.

These are the events communities compete for.

The archers are disciplined young athletes. Their families are engaged and respectful. Hotels appreciate the group business. Restaurants enjoy the steady traffic. Venue staff consistently describe the experience as smooth and professional. This is the kind of sports tourism that strengthens relationships and builds repeat business.

At the same time, championship basketball continues to choose Owensboro. The State Christian Basketball Tournament and other statewide competitions bring teams and fans from across Kentucky to the Owensboro Sportscenter.

This pattern matters. Event organizers return to cities that deliver. Facilities matter, and the Owensboro Convention Center and Owensboro Sportscenter provide competitive venues. Yet facilities alone do not secure national events.

Visit Owensboro works months in advance on bid proposals, hotel coordination, marketing support, and on-site execution. Our team shows up early, stays late, and treats each tournament as an opportunity to showcase the city. That consistency builds trust with national governing bodies and tournament directors.

Mark Calitri, President of Visit Owensboro, summed it up this way:

“Owensboro is making a statement across Kentucky and beyond. This community, our city leadership, the Visit Owensboro team, and our incredible venues are proving we offer the complete sports package. It’s not just a building — it’s the energy, the hospitality, and the commitment behind every event that makes it a big deal.”

Sports tourism is more than games on a schedule. It fills hotel rooms. It drives restaurant revenue. It introduces thousands of first-time visitors to Owensboro. It strengthens our brand as a destination capable of hosting regional and national competition.

Nearly 1,000 archers.
2,500 additional visitors.
Championship basketball.
Repeat national events.

Owensboro is not just hosting tournaments. Owensboro is positioning itself as Kentucky’s number one sports town — and Visit Owensboro is helping lead that charge.
