Myth-Busting Owensboro

Every city has its share of stories, legends, and a few misconceptions, and Owensboro is no exception. Whether you’re a lifelong local or a first-time visitor, get ready to uncover the truth behind the things you’ve heard and maybe learn something new about our community along the way.

Owensboro is a small town

This is a fact! Owensboro is often thought of as a small town, but with a population of nearly 60,000, it’s bigger than many realize. And while we may be known for our hometown charm, Owensboro doesn’t operate like your typical small town. Major events like BBQ & Barrels and ROMP draw crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 people, filling the city with energy and excitement. Add in our modern amenities, thriving downtown, and unmatched hospitality, and you’ll quickly see that Owensboro offers the best of both worlds: big-city experiences wrapped in small-town warmth.

Owensboro is the BBQ Capital of the World

This is a myth! Owensboro may not be officially named “The BBQ Capital of the World,” but we are widely recognized around the world as the BBQ Capital. Owensboro is known for many famous BBQ restaurants like Moonlite, Ole South, Old Hickory, and many more! Our claim to fame is our unique style of BBQ and the use of mutton (Sheep). We also host BBQ and Barrels (formerly known as the International Bar-B-Q Festival), which brings in thousands of people from around the United States.

Owensboro is the Bluegrass Capital of the World

This is a fact! Owensboro is more than just recognized as The Bluegrass Music Capital of the World. The Kentucky state legislature passed a resolution in 2020 officially naming Owensboro the “Bluegrass Music Capital of the World”. What makes this even better is that the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is the only one of its kind, and it is right in the heart of Owensboro, Kentucky.

Owensboro is only for retirees

This is 100% a myth! While Owensboro is a great place to settle down, it offers a vibrant atmosphere for younger individuals. Weekends are lively with free music events, festivals, and so much more. Owensboro is also home to four different colleges in the area.

Owensboro is in the middle of nowhere

This is a myth! Owensboro is definitely not in the middle of nowhere! Owenbsoro is located within 800 miles of 80% of the US population. If you have more time in your day, Nashville is only about two hours from Owensboro! We are also conveniently located about an hour and 45 minutes away from Louisville! You can find Cincinnati about 3 hours away as well! Owensboro is perfectly located around small and large cities!
