Owensboro is hosting a huge roller derby event in late September! So if you’ve never been to one of these exciting, fast-paced events, here’s all the info you’ll need ahead of time!
The Vette City Roller Derby is coming to the Owensboro Convention Center on September 28, hosted by the Bowling Green-based women’s flat track roller derby league. This “Almost Home” Roller Derby will be their first time hosting this quadruple-header competition since 2020.
The all-day event will include two bouts of junior roller derby at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Those will be followed by two adult rounds that evening at 5:30 and 7 p.m.
Vette City Roller Derby and Vette City Junior Roller Derby compete in competitions all across the United States. This year, they’ve competed in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Muncie, Tuscaloosa, Evansville and, now, Owensboro will be their next stop of the season.
For those who don’t know, roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played on an oval track by two teams of five skates. It’s played by roughly 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, but is most popular here in the US.
Those attending will see that the 60-minute roller derby games–or bouts–are a series of two-minute timed jams. The game uses offensive and defensive techniques, as well as a penalty box for fouls, which can have major effects on scoring.
