If you’re into competitive running, you KNOW you’re always on the lookout for a good road race. And part of the fun when it comes to these road races is getting to travel to new places. So if you’re a runner who’s never been to Owensboro before, keep reading!
Owensboro hosts a variety of competitive road races throughout the year. Some of them are located downtown in the city, while others take place in the county–but no matter which of these races you choose, you’re gonna be met with incredible views, friendly competitors and amazing race organizers.
Because many runners carefully plan their races in advance, we’re gonna break down the list of competitive races being held in Owensboro over the next several months. From 5Ks to half marathons, our city has a little bit of everything for runners at every level.
The Freedom 5K
This 3.1-mile race will be held on July 13, 2024. This is a fun and fast 5K course for you to achieve with your running and/or walking goals. This is a race the entire family can enjoy, as well as racers of all ages and levels of experience. You can register online until June 30 for $25/person or July 1-12 for $30/person. Registration the day of is $35. If you sign up by June 28, you get a free t-shirt!
The Freedom 5K will start at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church at 609 East 4th Street. The race begins at 8 a.m. There will be awards for overall winners in the male and female divisions for both running and walking, as well as Top 3 awards for select age groups.
MentorKids Kentucky Rugged Race
This is a 3.1-mile obstacle course run, making it a fun and new experience for athletes of all levels! On August 3, 2024, participants will experience a 5K race with 28 obstacles, including water crossing, barbed wire, rope climbs, mud and more. The Elite category is for serious athletes ready to win, and the Ultimate category is for those who want to run as a team and/or just for fun. All participants receive a finisher’s medal and a t-shirt. Additional medals will be given to the overall male and female winners in each category, and a trophy goes to the top team. There’s a Rugged Kids race for children 8-11 years old, and a Rugged Rascals race for kids ages 4-7.
The MKK Rugged Race will start at Diamond Lake Resort. To register for the race, call 270-926-6893. Proceeds will help support the life-changing work done at MentorKids Kentucky.
G G Talbott 5K
Held in honor of Grant G. Talbott, this Memorial 5K road race will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024. Talbott served as a counselor at Owensboro Community & Technical College for 10 years and coordinated the OCTC Road Race from 1998-2007. Entry fees are $25/person or $60 for a family of four ($5 per additional family member after that). Current OCTC students can register for $10. There will be prizes, drawings and trophies awarded to participants. You can register right here.
Orange Theory Fitness 5K
This 3.1-mile road race will be held on November 10, 2024 at 2 p.m. The course will begin at Horse Fork Creek Park at 3005 Fairview Drive. You can register to run at $25/person until October 1, or for $30 if you register the day of. T-shirts will be provided to participants, and awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, overall masters for males and females 40 years and older, and to the overall grand masters for males and females 50 and older. There will also be Top 3 awards for males and females, as well as for select age categories. Partial race proceeds will go to the Daviess County Parks & Recreation Department. This race will be professionally timed.
The first 150 participants to register will receive a commemorative pint glass. Runners will have the option of either a long sleeve 50/50 t-shirt or a dri-fit lady racer back tank.
Wendell Foster Half Marathon & 5K
These 13.1-mile and 3.1-mile races will be held March 22, 2025. This race offers a flat and fast route of Owensboro. The race will start and finish on the riverfront by beautiful Smothers Park, which offers three signature water fountains, views of the Ohio River and an award-winning playground. Water stations will be placed along the course and races will be professionally timed. Finishers medals will be given to those who complete the course, and prize money will be awarded to the top competitors in both the half marathon and 5K races.
For the half marathon, there will be a four-hour course time limit to complete the race. You must be 12 years old by race day to register. There are no age restrictions on the 5K.
