Alan Menken was the man behind some of Disney’s most iconic scores and songs. And guess what? The Owensboro Symphony is putting on an entire concert dedicated to Menken’s work with “Magical Memories: A Tribute to Disney Legend Alan Menken” in January.
If you grew up watching movies like A Little Mermaid, Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, then you’ve heard Menken’s work. You’ve probably hummed his tunes around the house or jammed out to “A Whole New World” in the comfort and safety of your own car. Even decades after Menken composed these songs, we’ve remembered and cherished them.
Some of Menken’s most notable works come from movies such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Enchanted (2007) and Tangled (2010).
As if that weren’t impressive enough, his accolades include winning eight Academy Awards, a Tony Award, eleven Grammys, seven Golden Globe awards and a Daytime Emmy Award. His most well-known songs he composed for Disney include “Under the Sea,” “Be Our Guest,” “Belle,” “A Whole New World,” “Friend Like Me,” “Part of Your World,” “I See the Light,” “Colors of the Wind” and “Under the Sea.” According to the internet, Menken is regarded as the “undisputed king of Disney music.”
And if there’s anyone who can pull off an amazing tribute to Menken’s work, it’s Troy Quinn and the Owensboro Symphony. They’ll be joined by the singing talent of Lauren Jelencovich, who will showcase amazing performances for the songs sung by Belle and Pocahontus.
