2A State Championships to create $262,000 economic impact

The Kentucky 2A Championships for volleyball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls golf are being held this weekend in Owensboro at Kentucky Wesleyan College and the Owensboro Country Club, bringing nearly 500 high school athletes from across the state to our community to compete for a state championship.

This weekend’s tournaments include eight girls volleyball teams, four girls soccer teams, four boys soccer teams and 97 golfers made up of 34 different teams.

Economically, hosting the 2A State Championships is a huge win for Owensboro. Each team is comprised of more than just the athletes, as the coaches, families and fans are traveling to Owensboro as well. Hotel rooms are limited, especially since ROMP and the 2A State Championships fall on the same days this year.

But aside from hotel stays, these athletes will be eating at Owensboro restaurants and shopping at Owensboro stores. Expect longer wait times at restaurants as student athletes will be competing throughout the day, filling up local restaurants, along with their families.

In breaking down the numbers (and money), the estimated economic impact from the 2A State Championships is astounding.

2A Volleyball is expected to bring in over $105,000 over a two-day period. Meanwhile, 2A Soccer is projected to bring in $99,550 and 2A Golf another $57,000.

In total, the 2A State Championships are estimated to create a $262,000 economic impact. These events are expected to produce one of Owensboro’s largest weekends in September in terms of economic impact.

“Visit Owensboro is proud to bring the 2A State Championships to our city, and to welcome the student-athletes to Owensboro as they compete for their respective championship titles,” said Visit Owensboro’s Chris Gendek, director of destination development & sports management.
