Hot air balloons take flight over Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. (July 9, 2015) — Hot air balloons will take flight above Owensboro as part of summertime festivities at the Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens.

Balloons Over the Garden is Aug. 28-30 and part of a weekend of events that include music, food, children’s activities and a special observance of the Daviess County Bicentennial Celebration. The colorful hot air balloons will cast a picturesque backdrop over the gardens in full bloom for the summer. On Saturday evening the skies will illuminate with a special lantern release presented by U.S. Bank Home Mortgage.

“The hot air balloons bring a unique look to the gardens during the early morning and evening,” said co-director Susie Tyler. “A wide variety of people get the opportunity to experience the gardens in a unique setting.”

Full hot air balloon trips and tethered rides are available by reservation. Flights are during morning and afternoon on Friday and Saturday. Tethered rides are also available. For information call (270) 993-1234.

The garden’s nationally recognized daylily display features 500 cultivars, some hybridized by the garden’s co-director, Bill Tyler. Workshops and tours showcasing the extensive daylily collection are available for viewing. So are rose and herb gardens, a children’s garden and playhouse, educational classrooms and a dozen other themed gardens.

The summertime event is a favorite of festival goers for its variety of activities in the garden and above. Tourism organizations recognize the popularity, too. Dazzling Daylilies – Balloons Over the Garden is a Top 20 event of the Southeast Tourism Society.
