This distillery was built in 1874 about a mile west of Owensboro – about where Specialty Foods Group is today. By 1886, it was under the control of Millett & Callaghan. And in 1888, it was operating as the Daviess County Distilling Co. with R. Monarch, president and John Callaghan as vice president-Treasurer. Its brand, Kentucky Club, was well established by this time.
The Medley family began making whiskey in Owensboro in 1901, when George E. Medley bought Daviess County Distilling. When George Medley died in 1910, his son, Thomas, became president. He was joined by brothers Ben, William, George and Parker.
Just before Prohibition ended in 1933, the Medleys bought Rock Springs Distillery and merged it with their Daviess County Distilling. In 1940, they sold that distillery off Ewing Road to Fleischmann Distilling Corp. and started Medley Distilling.
It was sold in 2014 to what is now Green River Spirits, which spent more than $20 million to get it into production again. Green River began making bourbon again in 2016.
