Coach Tim Riley Returns to Owensboro as Christian Academy of Louisville Qualifies for the 2A State Tournament
When the Kentucky 2A State Basketball Tournament tips off at the Owensboro Sportscenter, one of the head coaches on the floor will be a familiar figure to Owensboro basketball fans.
Tim Riley, now in his first season as head coach at Christian Academy of Louisville, returns to Owensboro after a decade-long run at Owensboro Catholic High School that reshaped the Aces’ program and left a lasting mark on the local basketball community.
“My wife and I cherish the ten years we spent in Owensboro,” Riley said. “I miss the community and especially my days at Owensboro Catholic.”
Riley coached 10 seasons at Owensboro Catholic, guiding the Aces through the most successful stretch in school history. Under his leadership, Catholic won two 3rd Region championships, including the program’s first regional title in 2019, followed by a repeat championship in 2020. His teams became a consistent presence in postseason play, changing expectations inside the program and across the region.
During Riley’s tenure, Owensboro Catholic basketball moved from competing to contending. The Aces were a regular factor in March, drawing growing crowds and establishing themselves as a program opponents prepared for each postseason.
Riley’s connection to Owensboro runs deeper than wins and losses.
“I’ve penciled in this tournament opportunity since I took the job at CAL,” Riley said.
The setting is part of the draw.
“I’m very excited to once again coach in the Sportscenter,” Riley said. “I’ve loved that arena years before coming to Owensboro.”
Riley’s impact in Owensboro was part of a much broader coaching career. Before arriving at Catholic, he spent 15 seasons at Warren Central High School, where he compiled a 307–128 record, won eight regional championships, and led the Dragons to the 2004 KHSAA Sweet 16 state championship. Warren Central later named its basketball court in his honor.
Across nearly four decades in coaching, Riley has surpassed 600 career victories, earned multiple Coach of the Year honors, and was inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
Riley stepped down from Owensboro Catholic following last season and accepted the head coaching position at Christian Academy of Louisville. In his first year with the Centurions, CAL earned a berth in the 2A state tournament, sending Riley back to Owensboro for the event.
Christian Academy of Louisville enters the tournament with a roster blending veteran leadership and high-level young talent. Seniors JJ Washington, a Division I recruit, and Roland Swan, a Bellarmine commit, anchor the team.
That leadership is complemented by a younger core already gaining national attention. Sophomore Jordan “Boogie” Cook has been ranked as high as the 33rd-best player in the country, while fellow sophomore Myles Howard sits inside the national Top 150.
Riley also points to sophomore Kellan Hall, a 6-foot-5 athlete who has been ranked as high as the sixth-best football player in America in the Class of 2028.
Despite the talent on the floor, this return carries personal meaning.
“I’m hoping for an extended stay so I can enjoy what I considered home,” Riley said.
For Owensboro basketball fans, Riley’s return adds another familiar storyline to tournament week — one rooted in shared history, respect, and a coach who still considers the city part of his story.
