Kentucky 2A Championships Generates $1.25 Million Economic Impact for Owensboro

The Kentucky 2A Championships are a huge component of Visit Owensboro’s economic impact on our community. A series of tournaments spanning six different sports and growing in number each year, the overall economic impact totals $1.25 million.

The 2A Championships was designed to give smaller schools with enrollments between 600 and 1,000 students a unique opportunity to qualify and compete for a state championship.

According to Chris Gendek, destination development and sports management director for Visit Owensboro, the Kentucky 2A Championships provide a great service in bringing statewide exposure to Owensboro-Daviess County.

“These tournaments bring in over 1,000 unique student-athletes, coaches and their families throughout the year,” Gendek said. “This brings people from across the Commonwealth that may not know about Owensboro-Daviess County and fills our restaurants, hotels and attractions.”

Even more, the Kentucky 2A Championships plays an important role in bringing awareness to Owensboro’s local colleges, Brescia University and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

“This awareness gives our local colleges an opportunity to get in front of over 1,000 students and their families as potential student-athletes, as well as students who could potentially attend school here, graduate, and continue living in Owensboro,” Gendek said.
