Top 3 Things to Do in Owensboro This Weekend: May 13-15

Bar-B-Q Block Party

This is for all the mutton, pork and burgoo fans out there, because this event is ALL about the barbecue. Bring your family, your friends, or just yourself to downtown Owensboro May 13 and 14 for Owensboro’s Bar-B-Q Block Party. Both similar to, and different from, our previous Bar-B-Q festivals, this year’s event will feature church cooking teams, the Backyard Cooking Competition, and delicious meals from all your favorite local BBQ restaurants, just like before. World Champion Competitive Eater Joey Chestnut will be back in town for a meet-and-greet on Saturday from noon-1 p.m., and there will be plenty of fun rides and midway games for the kids to enjoy. Live music will also be played both days in front of the Owensboro Convention Center! The Bar-B-Q Block Party will be held Friday from noon-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Dan Tyminski Band

If you’ve ever seen the movie O, Brother Where Art Thou? then you are very familiar with Dan Tyminski, whose voice famously accompanied George Clooney’s for the song, “I’m A Man of Constant Sorrow” for the film. The great news is, you’ll have the chance this weekend to see Dan Tyminski and his band perform live in Owensboro for an amazing concert! Held at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum on May 14, this 14-time Grammy winning musician (who has collaborated with artists such as DJ Avicii, Alison Kraus, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney and Reba McEntire) will mesmerize you with his extraordinary skills on the guitar and mandolin, as well as his “burnished, soulful tenor voice” that’s helped propel him to superstardom. Tickets to see the Dan Tyminski Band are $34 and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Kentucky Fried Pickin’

Hundreds of pickers, pluckers and strummers from all over the country will put on a free show this weekend at the Holiday Inn Owensboro Riverfront. Kentucky Fried Pickin’ will be held May 12-14 – the same weekend as this year’s Bar-B-Q Block Party, so there’s never been a better time to visit downtown Owensboro for some of the best barbecue and Bluegrass you’ll find anywhere! Those who are participating in KY Fried Pickin’ have rented rooms at the Holiday Inn, so those interested in watching and listening can hang out and travel room-to-room to see them play. There will be between 1,000-1,500 pickers joining in the fun, making it the biggest KFP event ever held. You won’t want to miss it!
