Kentucky Fried Pickin’ bringing hundreds of musicians to downtown Owensboro

One of the biggest Bluegrass jam sessions in the state is making its way back to Owensboro this year for the fifth time since its inception. Kentucky Fried Pickin’ will bring in Bluegrass pickers and strummers from all over for a weekend of live music at the Holiday Inn Owensboro Riverfront.

Kentucky Fried Pickin’ will be held May 12-14. According to Mark Hargis, founder and creator of the Bluegrass music festival, the 12th will serve as “Early Bird Pickin’” for anyone and everyone who wants to come out and bring their instruments for a day of play.

“We’ll have a huge group that day for a big, community pickin’ event,” Hargis said.

Those who participate May 13-14 have rented rooms to play in at the Holiday Inn, where anyone interested in listening to the musicians can hang out and travel room-to-room to get the full Kentucky Fried Pickin’ experience.

“There’s three to four pickin’ floors at the Holiday Inn,” Hargis said. “You can pick outside too. Last year we had 200-300 people pickin’ outside when the weather was good.”

Hargis said he expects a huge crowd of pickers for this year’s event – anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500. With the event taking place on the same weekend as the Bar-B-Q Block Party, this year’s event has the potential to bring in tons of spectators.

“We had a fantastic turnout last year, and I think this year will top that,” Hargis said. “The restaurant at the hotel – Burger Theory – will be serving specials throughout the weekend for those in attendance. We call this event a big together – a big Bluegrass family reunion.”

There are still a few rooms left at the Holiday Inn for those who want to participate! Use Holiday Inn code “KFP” or call 1-270-683-1111 to book your room now.
