Green River Whiskey: The Most Expensive Spirit in the World

When you’re trading barrels of whiskey for stakes in a gold mine, it indicates you’re producing some pretty great whiskey.

McCulloch’s whiskey was so good, in fact, he was able to trade only 20 barrels of it for a stake in a Colorado gold mine. That mine yielded gold, making Green River whiskey legendary in terms of value.

When Green River’s distillery burned to the ground in 1918, taking 43,000 barrels of whiskey down with it, the loss totaled $3 million in damages.

Today, that equates to more than $56 million.
