When it comes to the best bourbon tours in Kentucky, Owensboro’s Green River Distilling Co. ranks at the top of the list. According to The Travel – a blog that covers travel-related topics across the entire globe – Green River Distilling is one of the top 10 bourbon distilleries in the entire state to visit.
The Travel’s article, “These Are The Best Bourbon Tours In Kentucky Worth Your Cocktail Hour” listed Green River Distilling Co. as the fourth best in the state to tour. The Travel cited the distillery’s famous slogan (one that had to be changed) in the opening sentence.
“The folks at Green River Distilling Co. had to change their slogan to ‘The Whiskey Without Regrets” after their old catchphrase, ‘The Whiskey Without a Headache,’ was questioned by the federal government,” The Travel writes.
That changing catchphrase is just one of many fascinating facts you learn while taking a tour at Green River Distilling Co., and the team at The Travel was sure to point out a ton of other highlights (did you know there’s been a distillery there since 1885?!) that accompany a variety of tours offered at the distillery.
“Four comprehensive tours take visitors on a behind-the-scenes journey through the facility,” they write. “Every sense will come alive as tourists marvel at the expansive operation, catch whiffs of the aging bourbons, hear the machines going in the production areas, feel the glass in their hands, and tickle their taste buds with samplings of delectable liquid magic.”
As the westernmost point on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the recent launch of an historic rebranding effort, it’s a big deal to see Green River Distilling Co. on the same list as other well-known brands such as Maker’s Mark, Angel’s Envy, Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve.
And it’s also a big deal to be listed as a Top 10 Distillery Tour when you’re up against 38 total distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
A tour of the historic Green River Distilling Co. covers every aspect of whiskey production, from grain to mash to beer to distillate to barrels of whiskey. You learn so much in such little time, and you get to see, smell and experience so much behind-the-scenes magic that makes our local bourbon so delicious.
And after you see how it’s all made, you get to taste it. Resident experts teach you how to properly taste a variety of bourbon and rye whiskey and, trust us, it’s a lesson you’ll never forget. And something you can show off to all your friends for a lifetime too.
Distillery tours are $15 and include samples of three whiskies. The 60-minute tours run Monday-Saturday at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
