The Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau is launching a free monthly email newsletter, starting Friday, March 1, to tell people what major events are coming to town.
Dave Kirk, the CVB’s destination management director, said it will be especially helpful for restaurants to know when a large number of visitors will be at events near them.
“When we have a huge event like OMG!con (in June), we want to give people a heads up, so they’ll know what’s going on,” he said.
In past years, some restaurants only discovered that a large tournament was in town when large groups of players showed up for lunch.
Having a heads up would allow managers time to decide if they wanted to put more staff on during those days, Kirk said.
During last week’s Bryant Stiles Officers School, which is put on by the Green River Firefighters Association, at the Owensboro Convention Center, many of those attending walked to downtown restaurants for lunch each day, he said.
The newsletter, Kirk said, will help attractions know about new people in town who might visit them while they’re here.
“It will be extremely beneficial to us to know when folks are coming to Owensboro and how long they’ll be here,” Daniel Hewlette, O.Z. Tyler Distillery’s director of visitor experience, said in a news release. “It will better prepare us to both market to visitors and accommodate them if they want to visit the distillery.”
Kirk said the information in the newsletter is already on the calendar on the CVB’s website — VisitOwensboro.com.
But it will be handier in the newsletter, he said.
Kirk said, “Anyone can sign up for the monthly newsletter to know things like what convention is in town, what sports tournament is going on and what special events are happening. Estimates of how many people each event is expected to attract will also be available in the enewsletter.”
He said, “Our visitors do more than just fill up hotel rooms. They eat in Owensboro restaurants, shop at our amazing boutiques and try out our attractions.”
The March edition will include the Kentucky Fried Pickin weekend at the Holiday Inn on March 15-17 and the Home & Garden Show Saturday and Sunday at the convention center.

Kirk is hoping a large number of businesses and attractions will sign up.
“The more that sign up, the better, so our reach is farther,” he said.
