Brooklyn crew shooting bluegrass video here

The Wooks, a five-piece “rhythm and bluegrass” band from Lexington, was standing between two rows of peach trees in Reid’s Orchard on Wednesday morning, playing The Romantics’ 1980 pop hit “What I Like About You” over and over.

A film crew from The Mustache Agency in Brooklyn, N.Y., moved back and forth between the trees, shooting the band from several angles.

Yasmine Gomez, who was producing the video, said it’s part of Visit The USA’s worldwide campaign to draw visitors to several “music cities” in America.

“It’s a big deal,” Dave Kirk, destination management director for the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau, said of the filming.

“They’re doing 10 cities across the country,” he said. “Places like Las Vegas and Miami. Owensboro is by far the smallest city. It’s really cool. They sought us out. It’s great when a national company reaches out to us.”

According to its website, VisitTheUSA.com is owned and operated by the Corporation for Travel Promotion, now doing business as Brand USA.

The public-private marketing group was created in 2010 to “encourage and inspire travelers to explore America’s boundless possibilities.”

The video will be seen on GoUSATv, which has an app on streaming TV, as well as on Visit the USA’s social media outlets, website and online video offerings.

Gomez said a documentary will be released later featuring Owensboro and the other music cities.

Kirk said the Mustache crew will be filming Aaron Wheatley, creator of the Monsters on the Ohio catfish tournament, in a boat on the Ohio River on Thursday, Sept. 20.

They’ve filmed at Jerusalem Ridge in Ohio County and at Smothers Park, English Park and O.Z. Tyler Distillery, he said.

“This should pay off for us in the future,” Kirk said.

A news release said Owensboro was selected to represent bluegrass in the music-themed campaign “for its deep ties to bluegrass music with the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.”

Zach Noblitt, an Owensboro native now working in Nashville, was with the New York-based crew as a location sound mixer.

Noblitt said he was in downtown Owensboro this week.

“It blew my mind,” he said of the changes over the past decade.

The Wooks — CJ Cain, Harry Clark, Authur Hancock and Roddy Puckett — won the 2016 RockyGrass Band Competition in Colorado and was a finalist in the 2017 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition.

They performed at Owensboro’s ROMP Fest in 2016.

Owensboro one of 10 cities selected for Visit the USA

Visit the USA is in Owensboro this week filming a music-themed campaign as part of an upcoming global marketing campaign which aims to connect international travelers with the USA through musical artists and the cities which inspired them.  Owensboro was selected for its deep ties to Bluegrass music with the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.

“We are filming with the Wooks – a Kentucky-based band who has a deep connection to Owensboro having spent considerable time visiting and performing in the destination,” said Yasmine Gomez, Producer, The Mustache Agency.

The video will be used in two different ways. One will be an actual music video featuring the Wooks and the other will be a mini-documentary highlighting Owensboro as a destination.

“It’s been great to experience Owensboro’s story. This city has some incredible attractions and we are excited to highlight them on a global scale,” added Gomez.

“This is a huge deal for Owensboro. It’s an absolute honor to be included in this international marketing campaign along with cities like Las Vegas, Miami, New Orleans, Austin, West Hollywood and Detroit.

The campaign will be distributed on GoUSATv – a connected TV offering as well as the Visit the USA global digital ecosystem – social media, website, online video etc.
