Australian publication touts Owensboro

An Australian newspaper supplement has named Owensboro as one of the places Aussies should visit on a trip to America.

The article — “The New USA Bucket List: 11 Top Places You Need to See” — lists Kentucky as one of those places.

And under that heading, it says, “By now you will have built up a thirst; so much so that it would be almost irresponsible of you not to do your part supporting both the bourbon and tourism boom taking place across the southern state of Kentucky where distilling dynasties are resurging. Hire a Mustang and sip’n’sleep your way through the quaint townships of Louisville, Lexington, Bardstown and Owensboro.”

Owensboro’s O.Z. Tyler Distillery is the newest location on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the one closest to Australia.

“We’ve been working closely with the Kentucky Department of Tourism’s international travel department to bring attention to what Owensboro has to offer,” Dave Kirk, destination management director for the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau, said Thursday.

He added, “We strongly believe we have international attractions that the world needs to see.”

Mark Calitri, president of the CVB, said, “We believe Owensboro is becoming an international tourist destination. Just look at how many people we had at ROMP from all over the world. We are working closely with the Kentucky Department of Tourism international travel department to bring more international travelers to Owensboro. With the opening of the bluegrass museum, O.Z. Tyler and the new flight from London to Nashville, we will see more international people checking out Owensboro.”

The item appeared in Escape, a newspaper supplement that appears in the Sunday Herald Sun, Sunday Mail Adelaide, Sunday Mail Brisbane, Sunday Tasmanian, Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times in Australia.

Visit USA Organization (Australia) president Lucy Rowe told the publication that there’s never been a better time for Australians to visit the United States.

“The addition of flights operating deeper into the USA out of Australia are opening up parts of the country that have previously not had the same amount of exposure to the Australian traveler,” she said.

The other locations on the list of 11 Top Places are Alaska, Greater Palm Springs, Colorado/Utah, Texas and Beyond, Portland, Las Vegas, New Orleans, California, New York City and Hawaii.
