American Duchess will be in town Friday at English Park

It beat rivals in Louisville race

The American Duchess, the nation’s newest paddlewheeler, will be at English Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 4.

People won’t be able to go on board the boat, but they can stop by English Park to see it.

Dave Kirk, destination marketing manager for the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the 140 passengers on the boat will be visiting five local attractions while the Duchess is here.

Stops are planned at O.Z. Tyler Distillery, Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens, St. Stephen Cathedral, Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and the International Bluegrass Music Museum.

The Duchess was scheduled to make its first stop in Owensboro on April 26.

But high water on the Ohio River forced the steamboat, billed as “the first all-suite paddlewheeler on U.S. rivers,” to change its plans.

Its sister ship, the American Queen, billed as the “largest steamboat ever built,” is slated to be in Owensboro on July 6.

It can carry 436 passengers and a crew of 160.

The Duchess, which began its voyages on the inland rivers in August, won Louisville’s Great Steamboat Race on Wednesday, beating the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati.
