NCAA Golf Regionals to Take Place in Owensboro

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The road to the NCAA Division II Golf National Championships will run through Owensboro, Kentucky the next two years. Kentucky Wesleyan College has been selected to host the 2019 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Regional and the 2020 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Midwest/Central Super Regional. Both events will be contested at The Pearl Club, as approve by both NCAA National Committees.

The Women’s Regional Championship will take place May 6-8 in 2019. Twelve teams and six individuals on non-advancing teams by season’s end will comprise the 66-player field.  The event will consist of 54-holes and upon conclusion the top three teams will advance to the National Championship. Also, the top-three individuals not advancing via team competition will also book a ticket to compete at the NCAA Finals.

“When you consider the direct spending from the NCAA for the Regional Tournaments, the room nights, the days in the market, and the economic multiplier, the projected economic impact of the Division II Regionals will be over $620,000 for Daviess County,” said Mark Calitri, Visit Owensboro President & CEO.

“We would like to congratulate Kentucky Wesleyan College for securing this incredible opportunity for Owensboro.  In addition to the tournament, we look forward to sharing all the incredible amenities that Owensboro has to offer,” added Calitri.

The Pearl Club is located eight miles east of Downtown Owensboro. The Don Charles designed layout provides players of all levels a challenging and diverse experience. With bentgrass greens, five lakes and multiple teeing areas, the course can play from 5,500 yards up to 6,935 yards.

“We are excited that The Pearl Club has been chosen to host NCAA Division II Regionals the next two years,” said Owner and Head Golf Professional Terry Delk.  “We have been seeking opportunities to grow golf in our region.  It is our goal to host tournaments that will bring high caliber players to our area.  By doing this we give young golfers the opportunity to see high quality golf being played on a course that they have access to and can play regularly.  Since becoming the home course of Kentucky Wesleyan, we have seen a major uptick in the number of rounds being played by youth and young adults.  It is our hope that this rise in play will help the game as a whole.”

The Men’s Midwest/Central Super Regional will take place May 4-6, 2020. The 20-team field will consist of 10 teams from each the Midwest and Central Regions with the top four individuals on non-advancing teams of each region will also earn a spot in 108-player field. The top-five teams will earn a spot at the NCAA Championship contested in St. Charles, Missouri. Like the women, the top two individuals on non-advancing teams will also earn a spot at the National Championship.

“We are certainly looking forward to this opportunity,” commented Director of Athletics Rob Mallory. “These two events will reinforce all the great things going on with the City of Owensboro, Daviess County, and Kentucky Wesleyan College. It is a privilege to host any NCAA championship and preparations have already begun to continue the exemplary standards we have displayed in hosting previous NCAA Division II events.”

The 20-team tournament will include teams from the Great American Conference, the Northern Sun Conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and the Great Midwest.

In addition to each Regional, the Kentucky Wesleyan golf team will host fall invitationals in 2018 and 2019. Both events will give top men’s and women’s team within each Region an opportunity to play the Pearl Club under tournament settings.

Outside of men’s basketball, these two events mark the first NCAA post season Regionals assigned to Kentucky Wesleyan in school history.
