Music festivals, barbecue picnics and more during August in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. (July 16, 2015) — Visit Owensboro any weekend during August and you’ll find live music festivals, traditional barbecue picnics and other entertaining activities to make visiting a memorable and fun summertime experience.

 

Here is a list of popular events scheduled for the Owensboro area during August.

 

Big O Music Fest (Aug. 15): Headlining the music festival at Reid’s Orchard is Jake Owen, whose debut album Barefoot Blue Jean Night produced four consecutive number one hits. Also performing is Grammy Award winner Travis Tritt, whose country music career of hits stretches 25 years. Corey Smith, The Lacs, Ray Scott and special guests join them at the festival. Friday After 5 (through September): Live music plays on the Ohio River at five venues. Those span the length of Smothers Park and extend to RiverPark Center and outside the Owensboro Convention Center. The Sunburners bring a unique blend of tropical rock on Aug. 7. Dance to summertime favorites of the 50s with the Andy Brasher Band on Aug. 14. The Ernie Smalls Blues Band plays blues and jazz on Aug. 28. Parish Picnics (through September): Enjoy Daviess County’s signature pork, mutton and burgoo stew at traditional barbecue picnics held at churches within 45 minutes of Owensboro. The events are part of the area’s history. St. Mary Magdalene Church recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of its summer picnic. Balloons Over The Garden (Aug. 28-30): A weekend of music, food, children’s activities and a special observance of the Daviess County Bicentennial Celebration await at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden. Colorful hot air balloons will cast a picturesque backdrop over the gardens in full bloom for the summer. Tethered and full balloon rides are available. http://wkbg.org

 

Picking in the Park: Local musicians gather on the Ohio River shoreline for informal jam sessions at Allen Street Gazebo in Smothers Park. Upcoming events beginning at 7 p.m. are Aug. 29 and Sept 26.
