‘Friday After 5’ summer entertainment series returns to Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. (May 13, 2015) — Owensboro’s emerging music scene strikes a resonating cord when Friday After 5 returns to the downtown riverfront for 17 consecutive weeks of live music.

Friday After 5 is a summer-long concert and family entertainment series with a block party and street festival that take place each Friday from May 15-Sept. 4. Concerts begin at 6 p.m. with music playing until 11 p.m.

“Fun, free, friends and family are words to describe Friday After 5,” said Kirk Kirkpatrick, executive director. “Friday After 5 is really more than a concert series. It’s a complete entertainment experience for all ages.”

Bands play all genres of music on five stages spanning the distance of Smothers Park, an Owensboro downtown district with entertainment, dining, shopping and hotels. The park features a cascading waterfall, three signature fountains, a playground and a SprayPark.

Other entertainment venues include RiverPark Center and the Owensboro Convention Center entertainment space on the Ohio River.

New this year is the Don Moore Party Pier located outside the convention center and extending out over the Ohio River. Elsewhere, acoustic acts perform at the Atmos Energy Courtyard, while Cannon Hall features Glenn Family Services’ Gospel on the River. Cannon Hall is a state-of-the-art performing arts venue with 1,479 seats inside RiverPark Center.

“Gospel on the River is a unique opportunity to enjoy great music during six weeks of Friday After 5,” said Kirkpatrick. “It’s not unusual for the hall to fill during an event.”

The Kroger Street Fair in Smothers Park offers a variety of entertaining activities for all ages. The Patio Stage, located adjacent to the RiverPark Center, represents a snapshot of the music variety at Friday After 5.

Enjoy dance vibes played to popular music with opening act Caribou on May 15. The Usual Suspects play pop and dance tunes on May 22; classic hits are cranked out by Old School on May 29. Muench plays classic rock on June 5; the music shifts to country southern rock played by Insulated on June 12. Blackford Creek plays a variety of music on June 19.
