Florence Henderson will be Grand Marshal of Owensboro Christmas Parade

OWENSBORO, Ky. (Aug. 17, 2015) — Television icon and Owensboro native Florence Henderson will serve as Grand Marshal for the 79th annual Owensboro Christmas Parade on Nov. 21.

The parade theme is “A Bicentennial Christmas” to honor the 200th birthday of Daviess County. The event typically features about 120 floats, marching bands and other entries, making it the longest parade in the area.

The parade is also unique, beginning at 5 p.m., instead during the daytime.

“There’s no better time for a Christmas parade than early evening, when illuminated floats add to the brilliance of our decorated downtown,” said Shannon Wetzel, executive director of Visit Owensboro. “We are thrilled to have Florence Henderson come home to Owensboro and lead our celebration.”

A graduate of Owensboro’s St. Francis Academy, Henderson is best known for her role as Carol Brady in “The Brady Bunch” TV series. She was the first woman to guest host “The Tonight Show,” and had a successful Broadway career in hits like Oklahoma, The King and I and Fanny.

“Each year the parade committee spends countless hours reviewing nominations for the Grand Marshal,” said Adam Johnston, Owensboro Christmas Parade Chairperson. “We look for someone who has really put Owensboro on the map in a positive way, or someone who has made a significant contribution to our great community.”

In honor of her achievements in the performing arts, Henderson is featured in Owensboro’s Hometown Hall of Fame. The display is located at the Owensboro Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
