OWENSBORO, Ky. (June 2, 2015) — The ROMP Festival, drawing marquee bluegrass acts and thousands of fans, is one of many events inviting visitors to Owensboro during the month of June.
ROMP is an annual bluegrass music pilgrimage occurring June 24-27. Prior to ROMP the monthly entertainment calendar offers a great variety of activities for day-trippers and vacationers seeking fun in Owensboro.
Parish Picnics (June-September): Each weekend the area’s Catholic churches celebrate tradition and raise a bit of money, too, at parish barbecue picnics that serve tasty chicken, pork, mutton and burgoo to all comers. Churches within a 45-minute drive of Owensboro will host 22 picnics through September. One is quite special – the June 27 picnic at St. Mary Magdalene Parish. It will be the parish’s 100th summer picnic. (http://visitowensboro.com/listing/area-parish-barbecue-picnics/.
Dazzling Daylily Festival and Balloons Over The Garden (June 17-21): The daylilies are in bloom as hot air balloons illuminate the gardens and float over the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden. Festivities include talks and tours, live entertainment and lots of hot air balloons. Tethered and full balloon rides are available. (http://wkbg.org.)
Friday After 5 (June-September): Live music plays at five venues spanning the length of Smothers Park and extending to RiverPark Center and outside the Owensboro Convention Center. Muench plays classic rock on June 5; the music shifts to country southern rock played by Insulated on June 12. Blackford Creek plays a variety of music on June 19. The 50s music of Terry Lee & Rockaboogie play on June 26. Concerts begin at 6 p.m. with music playing until 11 p.m. (http://fridayafter5.com.)
ROMP (June 24-27): The music plays nonstop and culminates in weekend performances by these top acts. John Prine, Del McCoury, The Fairfield Four, Hot Rize and the Sam Bush Band are among the 35 groups playing during the festival. http://www.rompfest.com/lineup/.
